ScanStar is property of and arranged by the Scandinavian Packaging Association – SPA. SPA members are:
- Denmark: Danish EPS Association
- Finland: The Finnish Packaging Association
- Iceland: SI – the Federation of Icelandic Industries
- Norway: The Norwegian Packaging Association
- Sweden: Swedish Packaging Guild
One of the SPA members is always the organizer. SPA members agree between themselves about the rotation. The annual organizer is responsible for all preparations and practical arrangements necessary for smooth running of ScanStar packaging award competition. Instructions made by the annual organizer will be published on the www.scanstar.org website.
Entries to ScanStar may be made by the packaging supplier, user, designer, and/or constructor, if approved by the other stakeholders.
Packaging that is designed, produced, or marketed in Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway or Sweden before the competition entry date and that has not been previously entered the ScanStar competition may enter. Packaging ordered and paid for by a Nordic company, may also enter. Number of entries per entrant is not limited.
The packaging entries will be judged by a jury appointed by SPA consisting of at least three and not more than five jury members representing different SPA member countries. The organizer is always responsible for serving as non-voting chairperson as well as communications officer. The organizer covers the costs of the jury and meeting of the jury. The packaging entries will be judged by the criteria confirmed by SPA. The Jury decision is final and cannot be appealed.
The Jury judges the entries from economic, technological, and/or environmental perspectives. The graphic design, manageability, function throughout the supply chain, transportation and handling stress, material savings and economy of the packaging are taken into consideration.
A duly filled entry form describing in detail the entered packaging product must be sent latest 1st June of the year to the organizer. In addition to the form also other material like videos, photos, drawings etc. can be sent to support the entry.
A physical sample of each entry is to be sent in. If possible, also a sample with packaged good/s should be sent. The sample of entry must be at organizer’s disposal latest on 7th June of the year. The entrant is responsible for all costs related to sending and returning of the sample(s).
The organizer should be consulted before sending in samples containing fresh or frozen products, or packaging with large dimensions.
The entry fee is 1,000 euros for each entry. An entry that has not been paid will not be judged.
The organizer is responsible for communicating the results of ScanStar award competition. Communication materials will be produced in English and sent to other SPA members well before the publishing so that translations can be made to national languages. Organizer will decide the publishing schedule and other SPA members respect the decision. Publishing schedule is the same in all SPA member countries.
Website www.scanstar.org is collectively owned by SPA members. The Finnish Packaging Association is managing the website and responsible for updating the news at least four times per year:
- When the award competition is launched (January/February)
- When the award competition is closed (June)
- When the results are published (August/September)
- When the prizes are given (October/November)
www.scanstar.org is maintained in English. SPA members can have ScanStar pages on their own websites in their national languages.
All costs related to website www.scanstar.org will be covered by the annual organizer of the ScanStar.
Awarded entries will be given a diploma. All the winners of the awards are invited to prize giving ceremony, but travel or accommodation expenses are not paid by the organizer. The winner of the ScanStar award has the right to use the ScanStar logo on the awarded packaging and in commercial material advertising the packaging.
Winning a ScanStar award is the way for Nordic companies to enter the international WordStar packaging award competition organised by WPO the World Packaging Organisation. ScanStar organizer informs ScanStar winners about their right to enter to WorldStar. The ScanStar winners are responsible for entering their ScanStar-winning packaging to WorldStar as well as paying the required fee.
These rules for ScanStar packaging award competition have been agreed between the SPA-members in January 2022. Any changes to these rules can only be made by the SPA-members together. ScanStar rules exist in English language only. If any SPA-member wishes to translate the rules to a national language and there is a contradiction, this English version is one that applies.
